Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Marseille and its surroundings
Marseille has a long history and rich cultural heritage, reflected in its many sites and activities.
The city's Old Port is just 15km away. The port contains two large forts, named after Saint Nicholas and Saint John, as well as a marina. It is also home to the famous Saint Mary Lighthouse, a daily fish market, and a number of water-front eateries.
Not far from the port is Saint Victor's Abbey, one of the oldest locations in the city. Originally founded in the 5th century, the abbey is now the site of the St. Victor Church, which dates from the 11th century.
The Old Charity (La Vieille Charité) is another site worth visiting. Formerly used as an alms house, this baroque chapel, constructed from the 17th to 18th century, now houses the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology and the Museum of Art of Africa, Oceania and Amerindia.
Marseille has several other great museums, such as the Museum of Old Marseille, the Museum of Fashion, Cantini Museum and the Marseille Museum of History.
For outdoor activities, be sure to visit Pierre Puget Park, within walking distance of Saint Victor's Abbey. Water lovers will enjoy the Aqualand amusement park, located 5km from the Campanile Marseille- Saint Antoine Hotel.
